Picture description: Statement by the International Jury: The winning photograph of the Czech Press Photo 2003 depicts, in a visually interesting way, a moment of the daily life of a family living in the country. Spontaneous happiness of the two generations will touch the viewer at the first sight and remain in his or her memory forever – this is the secret of a successful photograph. This picture is a symbol of real happiness. The Jury is glad that this year’s main prize could be awarded to this photograph which differs from the flood of images depicting human suffering. Such images dull our senses so that we are no longer capable of recognizing the precious moments of human life. The main prize of the Czech Press Photo 2003 is unique. While the prevailing interest of the media worldwide focuses on violence, scandals, fashion, food and lives of celebrities, the winning photograph of the Czech press competition reflects man’s simple happiness and thus continues in the tradition of Czech photography – the kind view of the world. At the same time the photograph fulfills all the criteria to deserve the PHOTO OF THE YEAR title.
