Series description: Hanka, handicapped girl who suffers from cerebral palsy, Brno, 2014 “My name is Hanka, but they also call me Donkey. My irresistible braying echoes loudly through space, inside and out. My diagnosis is a paediatric cerebral palsy. I am totally immobile in my wheelchair and my mouth, forever laughing from ear to ear, is often my only means of communication with others. When I’ve no strength for braying, I use althernative means of communication. My assistants can communicate with me through questions which can be answered with ‘yes’ or ‘no’. ‘Yes’ is a blink or elegantly stuck out tongue, and for ‘no’ I wrinkle my nose in defiance. I lived at home in Bilovec with my parents until I was ten; there I attended a classical nursery and primary school. It was a happy time for me - I felt support and empathy from both my classmates and my teacher. I was very disappointed when, in my third year, I had to leave the school. I ended up in the Institute for Social Welfare Kociánka. I missed my friends and especially my parents. But gradually I got used to living in Kociánka. I am now 26 years old and my life’s dream was to have my own place with personal assistants. My dream came true a year and a half ago. I am still learning. In my free time I like to paint abstract pictures.”
