Series description: Kachalka - a gym made from metal scrap, Kiev, May 2014 “Over the last thirty years, body builders and gymnasts of various ages have been meeting in an outdoor gym in Kiev which was constructed from scrap metal. Near the town beach Hydropark, close to the centre of Kiev, there are over one hundred exercise machines made from scrap metal. The gym is free and the cost of maintenance is paid from voluntary contributions. Many people in Kiev can’t afford to pay for commecial gyms and so the Kachalka, on the river Dnieper, is very popular. Apart from being used by amateur bodybuilders and sportsmen, the gym is also popular with retired professionals.”
