Visitors to the Czech Photo Centre’s Small Exhibition Hall will be able to view the results of the contest for amateur and professional photographers entitled Czechoslovakia – Photographs of ’68, which is run by Czech Photo Centre alongside Czech Radio. 50 years ago, history was made in Czechoslovakia. After the political liberalisation of the 1960s which culminated in the so-called Prague Spring, the August occupation marked the end of hopes for “socialism with a human face”. And how did people live 50 years ago?
Czech Photo and Czech Radio will be looking back at this time through these photos in the Czech Photo Centre’s Small Hall gallery. Both organisations ran a large photography contest for amateur and professional photographers entitled Czechoslovakia – Photographs of ’68. The main theme? Everyday life in 1968.
“We looked at the event captured, the overall aesthetics and the readiness by which the photograph was taken. The significance of the events in the photographs was also important. But photographs of everyday life were also in the running too,” reveals Herbert, head of the judging panel of the method used to choose the contest winners.
Who was the contest designed for? For anyone who captured in photographs what life was really like at the time: the invasion and also other events in 1968, such as major cultural events, theatre and film premieres, music concerts, festivals, Věra Čáslavská and Jiří Raška’s sports successes at the Olympic Games, and ordinary life in 1968...
“We received around a thousand photos. The majority were of the invasion itself, in particular in front of the Czechoslovak Radio building on Vinohradská street,” says Herbert Slavík. And you will be able to view the best of these at our exhibition from mid-August.
